“I seek clarity and focus, but I also enjoy ambiguity and paradox.”
Happy to Be Here: A Transplant Takes Root in Farmville, Virginia, a compilation of my newspaper columns, and Which Good Book? An Impartial Guide to Choosing a Bible Translation are available from Pier Press.
I have edited dozens of reference books, including Religious Holidays and Calendars, Third Edition, and written more than 200 articles on topics literally ranging from A to Z (from Armenian Nuclear Power Plants to a company history of Zenith Data Systems). My work has appeared in a diverse range of reference books, newspapers, and nationally circulated magazines, including Encyclopedia of American Industries, Today’s Christian Woman, Scientific American, and the Detroit Free Press. My column, “Happy to Be Here,” appears monthly in the Farmville Herald, and I regularly contribute to Pier Perspectives, a blog that looks at the intersection of spiritual, natural, and tangible realities in contemporary society.
A few of my favorite things
The smooth emerald curl on the back side of a breaking wave
A dark sky filled with stars and a splash of Milky Way
Hummingbirds and butterflies
Sunshine on my face and in my hair
The majesty of thunderstorms
The slapping clank of lines against a mast
Flowers, indiscriminately
Walking in the woods
Waltzing until the band calls it a night
